Travel and Accomodations Information

Here are some details that might help you set up your visit to NIST and NCAL.  Note that listing of specific hotels and airlines does not imply endorsement by NIST or NCAL, and are provided for information only.

NIST is located in Gaithersburg, MD, about 25 miles NW of the center of Washington DC.  It can be reached by various methods:

Air - The DC / Baltimore metropolitan area is serviced by three main airports:  Washington National, Washington Dulles and Baltimore-Washington International Airport.  Fares and flight availability vary between the three, but there are generalities about each.

BWI is the farthest but can be the cheapest.  Getting from BWI to NIST without a rental car can be complicated, but you can take the MTA train from the BWI Parking stop to Union Station in DC, then take the Red Line Metro out to the end at Shady Grove.  It is a short cab ride from that stop to the area hotels.  Newly available is theICC Bus, which picks up at BWI and uses the Intercounty Connector (ICC) toll road to get to a park-and-ride lot that is 5 blocks from the NIST front gate and an easy cab ride to hotels.

National Airport is on the Metro line, and it is simple to connect to the Red Line out to Shady Grove, from which a taxi will take you to your hotel.  Rental cars and cabs from the airport are also available.

Dulles is in N. Virginia, and cabs and rental cars are typically used from there.  It is possible to get a cab to the Vienna Metro stop on the Orange line and make connections to get to the Shady Grove stop on the Red line.

Train - Amtrak runs to the Rockville and Union Station stops, from which you can get on the Metro and take the Red line to Shady Grove, from which you can get a taxi to your hotel.

Driving - NIST is immediately adjacent to I-270.  From the south (DC), take exit 10 (MD117-Clopper Road), take a right at the light at the end of the ramp, then take a left at the first light into the NIST main gate.  Keep right and go into the visitor center to get your badge and parking permit.  Be sure to have your photo ID from which you gave your exact name for your registration, and if a non-citizen, your passport.  From the north (Frederick), exit 11 onto Quince Orchard Road.  Take a left at the second light (Clopper Road) and a right at the next light into the NIST main gate.  Follow instructions from above for the visitor center.

Hotels:  Hotels in the area include Hilton Washington DC North, Hilton Garden Inn Rockville-Gaithersburg, Holiday Inn Gaithersburg, Comfort Inn Rockville.  It is our intention to arrange bus transportation from the Hilton to NIST if it is your desire to not rely on a rental car, but that is still pending.  For the purposes of finding a nearby hotel, the NIST street address is 100 Bureau Drive, Gaithersburg, MD 20899.

Cars and Taxis:  Rental cars are BY FAR the easiest way to get to NIST and get around.  Parking is free and plentiful at NIST.  If you take a taxi, you cannot get inside the front gate in the cab.  You would need to be dropped off at the visitor center, sign in, then wait for the internal NIST shuttle van (runs every 15 minutes or so) or walk about 1/4 mile to the building where the meeting is to be held.

Metro Shuttle and Taxis:  NIST operates a shuttle van from the administration building to and from the Shady Grove metro.  Access this van by exiting the metro station escalator to the LEFT.  Taxis are also accessed to the LEFT.

Hotel Shuttles:  Check with your particular hotel to see if their shuttle can take you to NIST.
