Joan Rosenblatt studied mathematics and statistics, earning a PhD in statistics at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, with a dissertation on non-parametric statistics. She joined Churchill Eisenhart’s Statistical Engineering group in 1955. Early collaborations with scientists were in colorimetry and electronic devices. She was an early participant in the development of the theory of reliability. She became Chief of Statistical Engineering in 1969.
