Dr. Katya M. Delak serves as an International Affairs Officer in the International and Academic Affairs Office (IAAO) at NIST. She shares responsibilities on the US – Egypt Joint Board Program, the Indo-US Science and Technology Fund, and the U.S.-Israel Bi-National Research and Development (BIRD) Foundation with other IAAO officers and also coordinates NIST activities with a number of countries.
Dr. Delak received her undergraduate degree in Chemistry from MIT and her Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Her research interests were based on understanding the mechanisms by which organisms synthesize mineral components (biomineralization) using NMR methods, which she did both as a graduate student and later as a postdoc at New York University.
In 2008, Dr. Delak shifted her focus to international science through an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Fellowship at the State Department Office of Science and Technology Cooperation. She then worked at the American Chemical Society's Office of International Affairs prior to joining NIST in 2011.
