 HIGHLIGHTS

MARCH 1 AND FEBRUARY 28, SENATE AND HOUSE PASS H. CON. RES. 27, HONORING THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF STANDARDS AND TECHNOLOGY AND ITS EMPLOYEES FOR 100 YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE NATION - On March 1, the Senate passed, by unanimous consent, and on February 28, the House passed, by vote of 413 yeas to 1 nay, H. Con. Res. 27, honoring the National Institute of Standards and Technology and its Employees for 100 years of service to the Nation.  On February 27 and February 28 Senators Sarbanes (D-MD) and Lieberman (D-CT), respectively, made floor statements commemorating the Centennial Anniversary of NIST.  On February 28, Representatives Morella (R-MD), Udall (D-CO), Boehlert (R-NY), Baca (D-CA) and Hall (D-TX) made supportive statements commemorating NIST and its employees and urging passage of the Resolution.  To view these statements via the Internet please go to http://www.nist.gov/director/ocla

MARCH 7, HEARING ON EXAMINING VOTER TECHNOLOGY REFORM - The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation (Chairman McCain (R-AZ)) has scheduled a hearing on Examining Voter Technology Reform for March 7 at 9:30 a.m. in room 253 Russell Office Building.  The following is the tentative witness list:  Honorable Bill Bradbury, Secretary of State, Oregon; Honorable Cathy Cox, Secretary of State, Georgia; Honorable Ron Thornburgh, Secretary of State, Kansas; Joseph Fox, President, Paralyzed Veterans of America; Wade Henderson, Executive Director, Leadership Conference on Civil Rights; Mary Jane O'Gara, Board Member, AARP; and Raul Yzaguirre, President, National Council of La Raza.

MARCH 7, HEARING ON K-12TH GRADE MATH AND SCIENCE EDUCATION: THE VIEW FROM THE BLACKBOARD - The House Science Committee (Chairman Boehlert (R-NY)) has scheduled a hearing on K-12th Grade Math and Science Education: The View From the Blackboard for March 7 at 2:00 p.m. in room 2318 Rayburn Building.
MARCH 8, HEARING ON TECHNOLOGY AND EDUCATION; A REVIEW OF FEDERAL, STATE, AND PRIVATE SECTOR PROGRAMS - The House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet (Chairman Tauzin (R-LA)) has scheduled a hearing on Technology and Education: A Review of Federal, State, and Private Sector Programs for March 8 at 10:00 a.m. in room 2322 Rayburn Building.

APRIL 3, TENTATIVE HEARING ON NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION - The House Appropriations Subcommittee on VA, HUD and Independent Agencies (Chairman Walsh (R-NY)) has tentatively scheduled a hearing on the National Science Foundation for April 3 at 9:30 a.m. in room H-143 Capitol Building.

MAY 2, HEARING ON NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION - The House Appropriations Subcommittee on VA, HUD, and Independent Agencies (Chairman Walsh (R-NY)) has tentatively scheduled a hearing on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for May 2 at 9:30 a.m. in room 2359 Rayburn Building.

MAY 9, HEARING ON BUDGET OVERVIEW OF NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION - The Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on VA, HUD and Independent Agencies (Chairman Bond (R-MO)) has scheduled a hearing on Budget Overview for National Aeronautics and Space Administration for May 9 at 10:00 a.m. in room SD-138 Dirksen Building.

MAY 16, HEARING ON BUDGET OVERVIEW FOR FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY - The Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on VA, HUD and Independent Agencies (Chairman Bond (R-MO)) has scheduled a hearing on Budget Overview for the Federal Emergency Management Agency for May 9 at 10:00 a.m. in room SD-138 Dirksen Building.

JUNE 6, HEARING ON BUDGET OVERVIEW FOR THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION AND OFFICE OF SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY POLICY - The Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on VA, HUD, and Independent Agencies (Chairman Bond (R-MO)) has scheduled a hearing on the Budget Overview for the National Science Foundation and Office of Science Technology Policy for June 6 at 10:00 a.m. in room 138 Dirksen Building.

MARCH 1, CONFIRMATION OF SEAN O'KEEF TO BE DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF OMB - On March 1, the Senate confirmed Sean O'Keef to be Deputy Director of the Office of Management and Budget

MARCH 1, HEARING ON PRESIDENT THE PRESIDENT'S FISCAL YEAR 2002 BUDGET  - The House Committee on Budget (Chairman Nussle (R-IA)) held a hearing on the President's Fiscal Year 2002 Budget.  A report on the hearing is in preparation.
 
 

 NEW BILLS

FEBRUARY 27, AMERICAN VOTING STANDARDS AND TECHNOLOGY BILL INTRODUCED - On February 27, Representative Peter T. King (R-NY) introduced H.R. 752, American Voting Standards and Technology Act.  H.R. 752 is intended to develop voluntary consensus standards to ensure the accuracy and validation of the voting process, would direct the National Institute of Standards and Technology to study voter participation and emerging voting technology and would provide grants to States to improve voting methods. The bill has been referred to the House Committee on Science, the Committee on House Administration, and the Committee on Judiciary.

MARCH 1, TECHNOLOGY EXTENSION BILL INTRODUCED - On March 1, Senator Clinton (D-NY) introduced S. 429, Technology Extension Act of 2001.  S. 429 would expand the Manufacturing Extension Program to bring advanced technologies to small and medium-sized businesses. The bill has been referred to the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.
