Forensic science methods often help determine whether a suspect has abused prescription drugs, illegal drugs or alcohol. NIST scientists develop Standard Reference Materials that forensic science laboratories can use to validate the accuracy of their analyses of controlled substances. NIST researchers are also developing methods to help investigators detect drugs at a crime scene, in cargo, or at transit hubs.
