Dr. John Slotwinski

Dr. John Slotwinski is a Physicist in the Science Based Manufacturing Group. From 12/08-10/10 he was the Strategic Planning Manager for the NIST Manufacturing Engineering Laboratory, where he coordinates Strategic and Operational planning for the Laboratory and is a member of the MEL Senior Management Team. From  10/04 – 12/08 he served as NIST Liaison to the United States Council for Automotive Research (USCAR), a consortium of the “Detroit-3” Automakers that focuses on pre- and non-competitive cooperative research and development.  In this capacity Dr. Slotwinski managed a multi-year portfolio of NIST projects in collaboration with USCAR, and also served as NIST’s main point-of-contact for automotive interactions and advocacy of NIST’s automotive portfolio of projects.  He was a member of the 2005 – 2006 NIST United States Measurement System’s Team, for which he was awarded the Department of Commerce Bronze Medal (2007) for superior federal service.

Dr.  Slotwinski came to NIST in 1989 when he joined the Ultrasonic Standards Group. While a member of this group he performed research in ultrasonic testing of advanced materials, developed ultrasonic sensor systems for industrial manufacturing applications, and was responsible for the NIST ultrasonic reference block calibration facility. He has published over 20 technical papers, including in periodicals such as Physical Review B, Applied Optics, and The Journal of Research in Nondestructive Evaluation. He is the author of the ultrasonics chapter in the ASTM Handbook of Reference Data for Nondestructive Testing (February, 2002), a widely-used NDT field-guide. He has given numerous conference presentations and invited talks.

From 1999 to 2001 he served as Scientific Advisor to the Director of the NIST Manufacturing Engineering Laboratory (MEL), where he was a member of the MEL Senior Management Team. In April of 2001 John helped form the NIST Industrial Liaison Office, where he was a Senior Technical Advisor to the NIST Director.  In this capacity he focused on liaison efforts between NIST and the U.S. Automotive Industry.   Dr. Slotwinski is a member of Sigma Xi and Past President of the NIST Chapter of Sigma Xi.  He has been a member of The American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT), The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), ΣΠΣ (National Physics Honors Society), and AΣΝ (National Jesuit Honors Society.) He is also past chairman of the ASTM E07-06-02 subcommittee on ultrasonic reference blocks and calibrations.  He has also been recognized by several ASNT Chapters for his contributions to ultrasonic testing.
