Star R. (Regina) Burgess is the secretary of the Fire Fighting Technology Group of the Fire Research Division (FRD) of the Engineering Laboratory (EL) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Ms. Burgess, after graduating from high school, took a course in electronics she accepted a job at Defense Electronic Inc. where she assembled component boards. Today these boards are used in Post Office machines to sort mail.
In 1972, Ms. Burgess came to National Institute of Standards and Technology/National Bureau of Standards as a Coding Clerk/Keypunch Operator working on a project from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) for the Product Evaluation Technology Division.
Ms. Burgess joined the Center for Fire Research in 1974 as a Librarian Technician to work on the Fire Safety database for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) contract and also help to organize the fire research literature. Today, the Collection can be accessed in FIREDOC.
Ms. Burgess was the primary contact person for customers from the outside to deal with BFRL through inquiries to the RIS library, as well as the clients of FIREDOC EXPRESS. FIREDOC is the online bibliographic database to the Building and Fire Research Information literature collection. The collection started in 1971. It contains national and international fire research reports, books, journal articles and conference proceedings, and BFRL staff publications.
