Daniel R. Flynn is a guest researcher in the Heat Transfer and Alternative Energy Systems Group of the Energy and Environment Division (EED) of the Engineering Laboratory (EL) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). In 1958, Mr. Flynn joined the Heat Transfer Section in the Building Research Division, which later became the Heat Transfer and Alternative Energy Systems Group in the Energy and Environment Division of the EL. During the period from 1958 through 1970, he designed and built a wide variety of thermal conductivity apparatus for use at temperatures from 80 K to over 2100 K, on materials ranging from platinum to soils, insulations to ceramics. This work included design of an absolute cut-bar apparatus for use at temperatures up to 1500 K, design of a unique radial heat flow apparatus for use at temperatures up to 1400 K, design of an advanced apparatus for determination of the thermal conductivity of platinum up to 1300 K, design of an improved apparatus for determination of the thermal conductivity of refractory materials using a steam calorimeter, and extensive collaboration in the design of the original NBS line-source guarded hot plate apparatus.
In 1970, Mr. Flynn changed fields and founded the Applied Acoustics Section, which later was expanded to be the Applied Acoustics and Illumination Section within what is now the EL. In 1972, that acoustics work was transferred to the Center for Manufacturing Engineering, which later became the Manufacturing Engineering Laboratory (MEL), and Mr. Flynn continued for a period as the Section Chief. Through various reorganizations, he continued as a senior staff member or Group Leader. In 1980, he was appointed as Chief of the Mechanical Production Metrology Division within MEL and managed that Division of about 50 full-time personnel until 1985, when he asked to be relieved so that he could spend more time on technical work. He continued as a Group Leader until taking an early retirement in 1990.
From 1995 to the present, Mr. Flynn has served as a Guest Researcher or Contractor to NIST, with most of his NIST-related activities being associated with what is now the Energy and Environment Division in EL. In particular, he had very extensive involvement in the design of the new NIST 500-mm guarded hot plate apparatus for use from 90 K to 900 K in air, inert gas, or vacuum.
Mr. Flynn has held many senior positions in standards organizations in both heat transfer and acoustics. His professional society activities and honors include being a founder of the International Thermal Conductivity Conferences (1961), founding Member of the Institute of Noise Control Engineering (1971), member of the Board of Directors of the Institute of Noise Control Engineering (1972-1974), Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, Member of the Governing Board of the International Thermal Conductivity Conferences (present), Fellow of the International Thermal Conductivity Conferences (2005), and recipient of the Thermal Conductivity Award from the International Thermal Conductivity Conferences (2007).
