LOU ANN HEIMBROOK

Lou Ann is currently Vice President, Planning and Corporate Service for Merck & Company, Inc. She is responsible for integrated planning and portfolio management of all Global Services at the enterprise level, which include IT, Facility Management, Corporate Services and Sigma. She also leads the development and management of corporate services centers of expertise in real estate management, travel and transportation, energy and sustainability, collaborative technology and services, and corporate policies in the related areas.
Most recently, as Vice President Global Site Services, Lou Ann was responsible for developing and implementing an integrated, global site services strategy, and operating model. These responsibilities include the operational planning and management of all site services at research, marketing and select manufacturing sites, as well as the development and management of the world-wide capital infrastructure investment strategy. She also holds responsibility for the strategic planning and management of the Merck real estate portfolio, and developing policies and deployment strategies for several business services across Merck.
Prior Merck experience was as the Vice President of MRL Research Operations where she built and led a world wide organization in research which provided the management of global scientific operational and facility services, the research capital planning and management process, external scientific sourcing efforts as well as business performance management for the Basic Research, Pre-Clinical and Licensing areas.
Prior to joining Merck & Co. she had a 17-year track record of increasingly responsible positions at AT&T Bell Laboratories, and subsequent spin-off companies including Lucent Technologies and Agere Systems. At the time of her departure from Agere Systems, Lou Ann held the position of vice-president of Optoelectronics and Integrated Circuit Operations where she had global accountability for research engineering, manufacturing, facilities, environmental health and safety, and technology development.
Lou Ann obtained her bachelor's degree in chemistry at Duke University and her Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Wesleyan University. She also complimented her scientific training with management training at Insead University. She has published extensively in the scientific literature, and given numerous invited talks in academia, industry and government. She has been honored with industrial awards, including the AT&T Bell Laboratories Individual Research Achievement Award, and served as a member and chair of numerous U.S. Chemical and Semiconductor Industry boards as well as government boards.
She has served as a member and chair of the National Research Council Board of Assessment of the National Institute of Standards Chemical Science and Technology Review Panel, chaired the National Research Council Board on Assessment of Microelectronics of the National Institute of Standards Laboratories and most currently serves on the Visiting Committee for the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the board of the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
