OMB Workshop on Federal Participation in the Development and Use of Voluntary Consensus Standards and in Conformity Assessment Activities

The public OMB workshop on Federal Participation in the Development and Use of Voluntary Consensus Standards will take place at the Gaithersburg campus of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) on May 15 from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm.

The workshop will consist of moderator-facilitated panels of experts on subjects drawn from the

March 30th Federal Register Notice requesting public comment on whether or not OMB should consider supplementing the existing OMB Circular A-119.

In addition to remarks from Jeff Weiss, Associate Administrator of OMB’s Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, and Dr. Pat Gallagher, Director of NIST, the workshop will include:

• Panel on Implementation – experts from federal agencies will address experiences in the implementation of OMB Circular A-119.
• Panel on Incorporation by Reference (IBR) – public and private sector experts will discuss challenges associated with referencing private sector standards in federal regulations.
• Views from the Private Sector Panel – Industry and Association experts will present case studies from their perspective on federal use of private sector standards and conformity assessment mechanisms.
