Title: Independently Measuring the Performance of Automotive Crash Warning Systems
Published: January 29, 2007
Abstract: This paper describes a system for independently measuring the performance of automotive crash warning systems. The goal is to provide a reference, or ground-truth, for the quantitative evaluation of warning system performance. The described Independent Measurement System (IMS) consists of calibrated cameras to determine vehicle position within the lane and two laser-scanners to measure range and range-rate to obstacles in front and to the sides of the vehicle. We describe a novel procedure for determining the range uncertainty of the laser-scanners, including the effects of delay when the measurements are from a vehicle traveling at highway speeds. We include an example to illustrate the benefits of ground truth to support system development and to analyze system performance.
